How to Spend Five Memorable Days in Toronto

Toronto, Canada’s largest city, offers a blend of cosmopolitan charm and natural beauty, with a wide array of things to do, see and experience. With direct flights from the UK in just under 8 hours, it is a great destination to take a city break and one I personally adore.

To help make the most of your time in this fabulous city, I’ve put together an itinerary for five days, including popular activities and hot dining spots.

At the bottom of this guide, you’ll find my curated list with Viator – allowing you to book some of my recommended activities, all in one place. Additionally, many of these offer a ‘Reserve Now, Pay Later’ option.

Day 1

After arriving at the airport, make your way by private transfer to your hotel of choice. Spend whatever hours of daylight you have left exploring Downtown and Yonge Street. Visit the Instagrammable 10-foot Toronto sign at Nathan Phillips Square and Old City Hall. Pop into the Eaton Centre for a spot of shopping at one of the 230 retailers you’ll find inside. As the night falls, the area of Yonge Dundas Square becomes alight with the glow of neon signs and billboards – think Piccadilly Circus or Times Square!

Head to the highly-praised Richmond Station restaurant for dinner. Known for it’s modern Canadian cuisine, it offers a menu that highlights fresh, locally sourced ingredients with a creative twist. With an open kitchen, you can watch the chefs working their magic while you wait in a welcoming atmosphere. Booking is recommended.

Day 2

After breakfast, start your morning by visiting one of Toronto’s most iconic landmarks – the CN Tower. Take the quick trip up to the top to enjoy panoramic views of the city (and on clear days as far as Niagara Falls!). You can take the glass-floor elevator up to the observation deck or if you’re feeling extra brave, challenge yourself by walking the EdgeWalk—a thrilling, outdoor, hands-free walk around the tower’s edge.

While you’re in this area, spend a couple of hours at the impressive Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada next door, or hop across the street to Roundhouse Park and explore the beautifully restored buildings or vintage trains.

Within the Roundhouse building, you’ll find Steam Whistle Brewing where you can stop for lunch, before taking one of their fun tours. Sample Steam Whistle beer as you are guided behind the scenes of this fascinating brewery.

After your tour, hop in an Uber to the Distillery District – a trendy, pedestrian-only area filled with cobblestone streets, art galleries, boutique shops, and cafes. Spend the time exploring the cute historic area at your own pace, book a guided walking tour or even a Segway, if you’re not too tipsy after the brewery!

Stay in the area for dinner at Madrina Bar y Tapas. It’s a stylish Spanish-inspired restaurant that has earned rave reviews for its authentic tapas and vibrant atmosphere. Featuring a wide variety of small plates, from deliciously seasoned patatas bravas to succulent jamón ibérico, as well as an extensive wine selection.

Rest your head well tonight, you’ll have an early start tomorrow!

Day 3

Today, take a guided day trip to mesmerising Niagara Falls! You’re less than 2 hours away so it would be a shame not to take advantage and cross this off your bucket list.

Book from a choice of tour providers that offer guided transport only, or include additional attractions in the price. I’d highly recommend a boat cruise to experience the force of the water up-close and feel the spray on your face!

Also, don’t miss visiting the view point at Table Rock Centre, where you can feel the power of the water as it rushes over the edge of Horseshoe Falls.

With most tour groups, you’ll get a few hours to explore Niagara and there are dozens of things to fill your time, whatever your interests.

For fairground-style fun, stop by Clifton Hill amusement area, where you could play 18 holes of Dinosaur Adventure Golf, take a ride on the SkyWheel or discover the bizarre at Ripley’s Believe It or Not!

If nature is your thing, The Butterfly Conservatory is a tropical paradise, home to over 2,000 colorful butterflies that flutter freely among lush plants and vibrant flowers, creating a serene and magical experience for visitors.

Thrill-seekers can take a helicopter flight over the falls (weather dependent!) or even zip line above them!

However you choose to spend your time in Niagara, you’re sure to have a day you’ll never forget.

On return to Toronto, find somewhere to grab poutine for dinner – Canada’s signature dish of fries, cheese curd and gravy. It’s the perfect blend of savoury flavours and indulgent textures.

Day 4

Start with a ferry ride to the Toronto Islands, a peaceful getaway just a short ride from downtown. Whether you’re renting a bike or taking a leisurely stroll, the islands offer stunning views of the Toronto skyline and plenty of green space for relaxation. The islands are ideal for a morning escape, and opportunity to disconnect from the city while enjoying nature.

While on the Toronto Islands, enjoy a relaxed lunch at The Riviera Kitchen, known for its laid-back atmosphere and delicious brunch options. This cozy spot offers a great selection of food and drink, all served with a view of the water.

When you get back off the ferry, jump on a tram and explore the vibrant, eclectic neighbourhood of Kensington Market. Known for its colourful murals, vintage stores, and diverse food options, Kensington is a favourite among locals and visitors alike.

From here, you’re only steps away from Toronto’s Chinatown – one of the largest in North America. Take a wander as day turns to night and dine at the trendy R&D. Known for its inventive approach to classic Asian flavours, R&D combines bold, contemporary twists with traditional dishes, creating a unique dining experience.

Day 5

You’ll start today at the bustling St Lawrence Market, one of the best food markets in the world. Grab a late breakfast – why not try a peameal bacon sandwich at Carousel Bakery, a local favourite!

After a couple of hours of taking in the sounds and smells of the market, step into the fairytale world of Casa Loma! Take an Uber uptown to this majestic, early 20th-century castle, complete with turrets, towers, and sprawling gardens. As you wander through the opulent rooms, you’ll be transported back in time to the days of the aristocratic Sir Henry Pellatt, who built Casa Loma as his private residence. If you think it looks familiar, it’s probably because you’ve glimpsed it in one of the many films that have used it as a backdrop – from late 80’s classic ‘Cocktail’ to ‘X-Men’.

If you’re not too tired this afternoon, head to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). The ROM is one of the largest museums in North America and is known for its diverse collections, ranging from ancient artifacts to natural history exhibits. It’s a fantastic way to spend a few hours immersing yourself in art, culture, and science.
